How Do I Keep Individual Animal Records Without Paper Notebooks?
You keep records by registering each animal with its identification, birth date, lineage, and group, and by adding weights, treatments, movements, and notes as linked entries that build its history over time. On Jestor, this runs through an animals table linked to event records.
Paper notebooks are easy to start but hard to search and easy to damage. Finding the history of one animal can take a long time, and information may disappear with the notebook.
What paper animal records cost
- Time lost searching for a single animal's history
- Records destroyed by weather or damage
- Errors when handwriting is hard to read
- Difficulty analyzing performance across animals
- Missing information during sales or sanitary inspections
How digital animal records work
- Each animal is a record with identification and group
- Weights, treatments, and movements attach as events
- Notes and photos can be added from the field
- Filters and dashboards show performance by animal, group, or lot
Why Jestor fits this use case
- Histories are searchable in seconds
- Data is safe from physical damage
- Performance analysis becomes possible
- This scales from a small herd to thousands of animals
