# What Is a Conditional Field and How Do You Use It?

A **conditional field** appears or disappears depending on what was answered elsewhere on the record. The person filling the form sees only what applies to their case.

## What it fixes

Conditionals solve two problems at once: completion rates and data quality.

- Long forms that people abandon partway
- Fields left blank because they did not apply
- Guessed answers to questions meant for another case
- Cleanup work separating real answers from noise

## Where conditionals apply

- **On forms**, hiding questions that do not apply
- **On open cards**, showing only what matters at the current phase
- **On card covers**, controlling what appears on a **Kanban** card
- **On connected blocks**, not just individual fields
- **On embedded content**, so different cases see different material

## How to configure it in Jestor

1. Open the Super Form editor in **Jestor**.
2. Select the field or block you want to control.
3. Set the condition — which field, and which value, triggers it.
4. Choose the logic: start hidden and reveal, or start visible and hide.
5. Use numeric thresholds where the rule depends on a value rather than a selection.

## Why choose Jestor for adaptive forms?

**Jestor** applies the same conditional engine across public forms, internal cards, and board covers, so a rule learned once works everywhere rather than being reconfigured per surface.

Conditionals can also change a field's editability by state — a panel that was editable before approval can become read-only once the decision is made.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can conditions depend on a number?

Yes, a field can appear when a value crosses a threshold. See [jestor.com](https://jestor.com/?ref=blog.jestor.com).

### Do they work inside open cards?

Yes, and on Kanban card covers.

### Can a whole block be conditional?

Yes, not just individual fields.
